It all began when Pat Rothfuss was born to a marvelous set of parents. Throughout his formative years they encouraged him to do his best, gave him good communication, and were no doubt appropriately dismayed when he failed to live upward to his full potential.

In high-schoolhouse Pat was something of a class clown. His hobbies included reading a novel or two a mean solar day and giving relationship advice to all his friends despite the fact that he had never so much as kissed a girl. He likewise role-played and wrote terrible stories about elves. He was pretty much a geek.

Most of Pat'south developed life has been spent in the Academy Wisconsin Stevens Bespeak. In 1991 he started college in social club to pursue a career in chemic engineering, so he considered clinical psychology.

In high-schoolhouse Pat was something of a class clown. His hobbies included reading a novel or two a day and giving human relationship advice to all his friends despite the fact that he had never and so much as kissed a girl. He also role-played and wrote terrible stories about elves. He was pretty much a geek.

Most of Pat's adult life has been spent in the University Wisconsin Stevens Point. In 1991 he started college in order to pursue a career in chemical engineering, then he considered clinical psychology. In 1993 he quit pretending he knew what he wanted to do with his life, changed his major to "undecided," and proceeded to report whatever tickled him. He likewise began writing a book....

For the next vii years Pat studied anthropology, philosophy, eastern religions, history, alchemy, parapsychology, literature, and writing. He studied half-dozen different martial arts, adept improv one-act, learned how to pick locks, and became a skilled lover of women. He also began writing a satirical advice column which he continues to this day: The College Survivial Guide. Through all of this he continued to work on his novel.

In 2000 Pat went to grad schoolhouse for English literature. Grad schoolhouse sucked and Pat hated it. However, Pat learned that he loved to teach. He left in 2002 with his masters degree, shaking the grit from his anxiety and vowing never to render. During this catamenia of time his novel was rejected by roughly every amanuensis in the known universe.

Now Pat teaches half-time at his old schoolhouse equally an assistant-sub-lecturer. He is underpaid but generally left lonely to do equally he sees fit with his classes. He is counselor for the college feminists, the fencing club, and, oddly plenty, a sorority. He still roll-plays occasionally, merely now he does information technology in an extremely sophisticated, debonair fashion.

Through a serial of lucky breaks, he has wound up with the all-time agent and editor imaginable, and the first book of his trilogy has been published under the championship "The Name of the Wind."

Though it has only been out since Apr 2007, it has already been sold in 26 strange countries and won several awards.

Pat has been described as "a rough, earthy iconoclast with a pipeline to the divine in everyone'south hidden." Simply honestly, that person was pretty drunkard at the fourth dimension, so you might want to have it with a grain of salt.

Since I've been reading a lot of detective-type urban fantasy lately, I decided to pick upward 1 of the original texts of the genre, simply to see what information technology was like.

Chandler wrote this dorsum in 1939, and the book itself holds upwardly remarkably well even though information technology's been seventy years.

It'southward very readable. Some of the slang is a little opaque, certain, simply not almost equally much equally yous'd recall.

And some of the intuitive leaps Philip Marlow takes are a little hard to grasp. But I'm non sure if that'south considering:

1) The cultural gap betwixt now and the time the novels were written.

2) The fact that it was assumed that a reader then should be willing to work a little harder back then.

3) The fact that this was Chandler's first novel.

Nigh interesting to me were the parts of the novel that didn't have annihilation to practice with the story itself. Marlowe constantly laments how corrupt guild and the government are, and I'd e'er thought of that as a relatively modern sensibility.

The biggest and most pervasive stumbling block to enjoying the book is the fact that racism and sexism are moderately rampant. Information technology'south non a slice of malicious propaganda like Birth of a Nation, merely the fact remains that Marlow slaps a dame a couple times to bring her to her senses. And at that place'southward talk openly demonizing "queers" and "fags."

Information technology's similar to Gone with the Wind in a lot of means. There's racism and sexism and casual violence confronting women. And given the fourth dimension period, it's hard to imagine how you could tell a story ready in and then and there without those things. It all seems very much a natural part of the story, and so thing-of-fact that it'due south nearly inoffensive.

That said, I don't know if that makes it better or worse than something malicious and blatantly attempting to promote these poisonous views. Nosotros tend to be aware of propaganda and therefore it's easier to call back about and possibly resist. Propiganda is similar someone too shut to you lot, talking too loud, poking you in the chest with a finger. It's pushy, and for the most part, humans resent and resist existence pushed.

Stories like this though, where these toxic element seem like natural parts of the genre, world, civilisation, or story... they're persuasive in a style that outright persuasion can never exist. They're like visiting a cool loft apartment in a repurposed warehouse. It's quirky and interesting and absurd people live there, and as well all the one-time industrial solvents accept soaked into the brick, and then every time you go at that place, without fifty-fifty noticing, yous breathe in a bunch of benzine. And when yous touch the banisters or walk effectually barefoot, you absorb only a *little* lead from the former paint. And and then every time yous visit, just past passing through, you become ever so slightly poisoned without even realizing it....

That said, this was a book that was instrumental in founding a genre. And reading this now, I see how so many people have been following in Chandler'south footsteps. Many of the tropes were obviously set up down by him, and they carry forward to this day.

All it all, a complicated but worthwhile read depending how much you lot're interested in the history of a blazon of story. But probably more informative than directly-upward enjoyable.

(Notation: I originally wrote this review dorsum in 2013, and today (in March of 2021, 8 years later) someone brought to my attending that some of what I originally wrote most the problematic elements of this book were themselves problematic. Re-reading information technology, I realized I hadn't done a skilful job communicating what I actually *meant* to say. So I've revised this to make my thoughts more articulate.)
